NARUC Resolution Designating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as a Day of Utility Service

WHEREAS, Efficiency, demand response, conservation and affordability are practices that National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) has emphasized repeatedly and will continue to emphasize; and

WHEREAS, It is critical that NARUC continue to educate ratepayers in more than one language and particularly low income ratepayers of the importance of these concepts, for among other things, these practices tend to reduce demand on energy, protect the environment and ultimately impact global climate change; and

WHEREAS, Public education efforts are an effective means of informing ratepayers of the aforementioned public policy goals; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther Kin’s birthday is celebrated as a day of service during which Americans celebrate the holiday by performing such worthy acts as feeding the homeless, cleaning up low-income neighborhoods, and taking elders to get health care check-ups; and

WHEREAS, One of Dr. King’s principal philosophies was to improve the human condition of all Americans; and

WHEREAS, Americans use some type of utility virtually every hour in their daily lives; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Board of Directions of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners, convened in its 2008 Winter Meetings in Washington, D.C., hereby designates Dr. Martin Luther King Day as a Day of Utility Service, serving ultimately to improve the lives of all American ratepayers; and be it further

RESOLVED, That NARUC encourages all Americans to engage in a utility act of service on Dr. King’s holiday; and be it further

RESOLVED, That Americans are encouraged to turn down the thermostat, weatherize their homes, change their incandescent light bulbs to energy efficient bulbs and install water saving devices; and be it further

RESOLVED, That Americans should take these utility initiatives not only in their homes, but throughout their communities.
