ACS Launches New Campaign
The National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners and a diverse group of
supporters launched the second phase of a national energy efficiency campaign with a kickoff
event Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at the National Press Club in downtown Washington.
The Anybody Can Serve, So Let’s Conserve campaign, initiated in January 2009 to coincide
annually with the Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday, rolled out a new program to demonstrate
how families can take simple steps to lower their energy usage, save on utility bills, and help
clean the environment.
The “30-60-90 Day Challenge” will pit low-middle income families (families that make $50,000 or less a year) from all over the country against each other in a competition to see who can conserve the most electricity. NARUC President David Coen, Anybody Can Serve, So Let’s Conserve campaign Chairwoman Colette Honorable, and celebrity TV Judge Karen Mills-Francis provided details on the challenge and encourage interested families to sign up.
Participating families will be asked to submit their utility bills from April, May and June of
2009 to establish a baseline cost for their utility services. The selected families will then
compete against each other during the months of April, May and June of 2010 in an effort to
become the family that conserves the most energy during the three month challenge.
Anybody Can Serve will outfitted the families with an energy efficiency toolkit, which
includes energy efficient light bulbs, heater insulation blanket, weatherstripping tape and
caulking. They will also blog and receive webcams to upload pictures and videos, so the
general public can follow along.
“This campaign brings energy efficiency into Dr. King’s legacy of service,” said President
Coen. “There are simple steps consumers can take to lower their energy bills and help
improve the environment, because the cleanest megawatt is the one never used.”
“The 30-60-90 Day Challenge will demonstrate how easy it is for families to conserve
energy,” said Anybody Can Serve Chair Colette Honorable. “We hope that people tune in,
follow along, and learn. This is the nexus between energy efficiency and reality TV.”
